An Integration That Directly Improves Site Safety

In An Evacuation Emergency, How Will The Event Be Handled?

When a site evacuation is required, the speed with which the workforce mobilises and evacuates the site is critical. Many businesses install some sort of evacuation notification system for workers but have you considered whether there's bottlenecks or friction in your process? Our construction customers identified a common problem with their site evacuations that we've worked with another supplier to solve.

Solid fencing systems must be installed in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and Australian Standards. Temporary fencing (without an overhead protective structure) must be a minimum height of 1.8 metres but no more than 2 metres. However larger sites are installing more robust perimeter security for safety and security purposes.

Irongate Solutions is an innovative Australian supplier of high-tech site security solutions that ensure only authorised, inducted personnel are permitted entry on site. The automated access control system logs worker and contractor movement on site using a combination of turnstiles, pedestrian gates, speed gates, waist high gates, and boom gates.

That's a great system for controlling who comes in and out of your site in a normal situation. But in an evacuation emergency - when you want personnel on site to be able to leave the perimeter as quickly as possible - having an access control system can create a dangerous bottleneck of workers, particularly if they're desperate to escape. Construction sites were finding that in an evacuation event, responsibility couldn't solely be on management to be at these access points. There had to be a better way.

That's why Vanguard Wireless and Irongate Solutions invested time in developing an integration with a new evacuation protocol. Should an evacuation be triggered by Vanguard Wireless' system, all sirens will sound and an API call is sent to all the gates on site instructing them to unlock. This means turnstiles go into free spin and gates open without the need to manually unlock them. The site can execute a fast, efficient evacuation that's not reliant on management location.

Once nominated personnel end the evacuation (via the control unit, Vanguard Wireless app, or original trigger) all sirens will stop and all Irongate turnstiles and gates will lock again.

Both parties have worked together to deliver an innovation that directly improves worker safety in an emergency event. The integration is available now and takes less than a minute to set up via the Vanguard Wireless user portal.
